Burke County NC

This historical marker names Samuel Newell’s first meeting in Burke County.

There is no marker for the more vital second stop where he received shelter at a patriot farm and care from Dr. Dobson. While recovering from the near fatal wound at Kings Mountain, Newell heard from the other wounded soldiers also recoering in Burke County. SN1754 was able to learn from each sector of the forces who surrounded Patrick Ferguson.

The monument also names a family among the first settlers of Opequon and Old Frederick County VA with Joist Hite, the Colvilles, and the Newells. The McDowells were well know on the overmountain side of the Blue Ridge from Morganton.
